I just finished reading your book, "Cartwheels in a Sari". Quite entertaining...
I too was involved with a "discipleship-type" cult church back in 1981. I was never really brain-washed, being the wild, outspoken Yankee girl (I was 21 & raised a catholic). I simply "fell away".
I'm glad (and amazed) you didn't kill yourself when you wee at your lowest point.
I'm looking forward to you coming to OCC soon!

Whether it's alcohol, drugs, shopping, sex, or work, many of us seek shelter in the "safety of objects"...and a cult leader can be just that--another "safe" thing. Isn't it more than a bit ironic that a Guru that spoke about detachment and the evils of materialism demanded unquestioning attachment and hoarded lots of stuff? But then, I suppose that was the point...beautifully written. Bless you, Jayanti...you DO have intelligence and the guts to embrace life instead of running away.

Jayanti, your book gave us much insight as we unravel our involvement in the cult of Siddha Yoga. The stories are different, but the themes are familiar. Thank goodness you were able to create a new, healthy life for yourself.

It is amazing to read the previous entry in your guestbook: "Who authorized you to label someone's honest mentoring and love for you as 'manipulation'? If that is not vivid proof of the manipulative power of the cult leader, I don't know what is.

It is amazing that you had so few words of appreciation for a person who gave you love and attention. Who authorized you to label someone's honest mentoring and love for you as "manipulation"? I wish you had some intelligence!

Interestingly, I have just read your book while considering myself to leave this cult. What struck me most was the candor in which you told your story. After years of leading a double life and keeping secrets from my friends and family, I, too, will have to muster that kind of courage if I want to have sincere relationships and to search for truth according to _my own_ "inner feelings" and "inner commands."

I heard your NPR interview today. Good for you! I struggled for years to get the education I wanted. Women with your intelligence and tenacity will help young women today succeed.
Best of everything to you.

I was a Sai Baba devotee for 13 years, until I found out about his sexual abuse of young men. What a shock for me. I totally bought into him being God in human form. I still ask myself how it is that I could have believed all this. I have also been part of several other spiritual groups. So much of your story resonates with what I have seen and experienced. I assure you, there is life after spirituality.

disciple in the Berkeley, CA centre from 1993-1998. My spiritual name was Tarunika. My daughter, who is almost 5, was born when I was 42 years old. I'm so thankful I was able to get out of SC while I still had time to have the wonderful experience of true unconditional love... as you said, it comes magically with having a child. I'm so happy for you!
